The Fathoms They Abide
The Fathoms They Abide
Growing up on a farmyard full of machinery and rusted vehicles fascinated me as a child. I played hide and seek amidst the barrels and tanks, the flaking paint, the faded signage. I have a deep love for the warmth of rust and ochre tones.
With this painting I have built up a tiled effect, using oils and multiple torn pages of an old recycled book that I have lovingly ink stained and texturised.
The title refers to an Emily Dickinson poem that I loved in school. There is a tangible and tactile element with this painting, it is presented like a piece of a derelict wall, that has been framed, for the viewer to peruse.
